PATINFO2025, the 47th colloquium of the Technical University of Ilmenau on patent information and intellectual property rights, will take place from 21 to 23 May 2025. Under this year’s theme “Innovation through Knowledge: Patents, Standards and Search in Focus,” the event highlights the importance of these intellectual property rights for innovation and competitiveness, as well as new developments in IP protection.
For one thing, the conference will address some underlying questions: Are patents and standards mutually exclusive, or do they interact in a fruitful way? A particular focus will be on standard essential patents (SEP) and the changed EUIPO plans for regulation as part of the EU patent package. These and other topics will be discussed in a panel discussion and in lectures by company representatives, IP experts, service providers, and academics.

In addition, trademarks and designs and the use and protection of intellectual property will again be on the agenda in 2025. For example, Elisabeth Fink from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) will give a presentation on the EU design reform and on how things change on 1 May 2025. A presentation by Robert Sterner from AUDI, for instance, will focus on current developments in brand and design protection in the automotive industry.
The main conference will be accompanied by an exhibition featuring some 30 companies presenting their latest developments in the field of IP rights data, software, and services. A series of short presentations and a free workshop program will provide further opportunities for exchanging knowledge and deepening specific topics.
