Officials in Poland landed a major coup in the war on piracy: In the country's Northwest, they dismantled a factory in which enormous amounts of illegal pharmaceutical counterfeits were manufactured. Hundreds of thousands of products were confiscated.

The Central Bureau of Investigations of the Polish police (CBSP) had observed the factory’s ringleaders, members of an organised criminal network, for several months. In the course of a large-scale raid, the officials were able to seize counterfeited medications valued at some 17 million zloty (ca. 4 million euro), including around 100,000 potency pills and 430,000 vials of steroids.

As the CBSP reported, the factory included some 50 machines worth ca. 4 million zloty (roughly 1 million euro), which were all confiscated. The wide range of devices, including screen printers, mixing machines, pill presses, and machines for manufacturing blister packs and cardboard packing material, made it possible for the counterfeiters to consolidate their supply chain. In addition, components and partially processed products were allegedly imported from China.

Officials assume that the counterfeiters had already produced counterfeits worth several tens of millions of zloty. Most of the counterfeited medications are thought to have been sold online. The Polish police arrested 14 suspects.
