French customs detectives recently uncovered a cosmetics factory near Paris that produced illegal imitations of brand-name cosmetics in addition to its own products. Tens of thousands of items were confiscated.

After several weeks of investigations, officers of the French customs investigations authority (DNRED) were able to discover the cosmetics factory, located east of the capital in the department of Seine-et-Marne. In addition, the authorities discovered two warehouses also used by the counterfeiting organisation.

Altogether the customs investigators confiscated more than 60,000 counterfeit cosmetic items as well as nearly 100,000 units of packaging material such as tubes, bottles and cans. A suspect was arrested. The counterfeit cosmetics, including body and face products, are said to have been sold to pharmacies nationwide.

“This is an exceptional and unprecedented case, not only because it is a laboratory with dual activity, but also because the place of manufacture of these cosmetic products was located on the national territory,“ a speaker of the DNRED commented on the discovery.
